Our story
A personal journey turned into a movement
Cancer United was founded in 2012 by Jan Sheward BEM, following her own life-changing diagnosis of breast cancer. During her treatment, Jan discovered a serious gap in the support available to people living with and beyond cancer — particularly in the areas of physical recovery, emotional wellbeing, and community connection. Determined to change that, she created Cancer United — a charity grounded in understanding, community, and strength.
From local beginnings to a regional force
What began as a small local group has grown into a highly respected, community-based organisation and strategic partner within the regional healthcare system. Working alongside the NHS, Macmillan, the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, and other health partners, the charity delivers non-clinical services that ease pressure on the system while transforming lives.
Empowering people through exercise, music and support
At the heart of Cancer United is CUFITTER™, a dedicated cancer-specific gym offering tailored exercise classes that help patients regain strength, confidence and independence.
The OUTSINGCANCER choir brings people together through music and the joy of singing, building friendships and restoring confidence through shared expression.
Peer support groups, including CU LIFE BALANCE, are designed for younger adults, new parents and those balancing cancer with work and family life — offering a welcoming space to connect, share experiences and find support.
