Cancer United Secures National Lottery Funding for New Project

Published: December 8, 2025

We’re delighted to announce that Cancer United has been awarded £20,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund to launch ‘Writing a New Chapter’ – an exciting new programme combining life coaching and creative writing.

Starting in January 2026, this project will support 50 people directly through five 10-week courses, bringing together Cancer United members, family members, carers and close friends in a safe and supportive environment.

What is ‘Writing a New Chapter’?

The programme combines two powerful approaches to wellbeing:

Life coaching will help participants set goals, build resilience and find ways to move forward in their cancer journey.

Creative writing will give people the chance to reflect on and share their stories, creating confidence, empathy and connection within the group.

Why we’re doing this

This project has grown directly from feedback from our members, who told us they wanted more opportunities to reflect and express themselves creatively. It builds on our holistic approach that brings together physical, emotional and social support to meet the whole needs of our community.

We know that member-led projects work. Our track record shows that 92% of members feel less isolated since joining Cancer United, 85% have built new supportive relationships, and 88% report improved physical health.

How it will work

The programme will run throughout 2026, with courses available free of charge so that no one is excluded. We’ll be promoting it through CUNEWS, our website, social media and through our clinical partners.

We’ll collect feedback before, during and after each course to measure improvements in confidence, wellbeing and social connection, and the learning will help shape how we develop future programmes.

This project wouldn’t be possible without the support of National Lottery players. Thank you to everyone who makes projects like this happen.
