Payroll giving - give as you earn.
Give As You Earn and help us support more people affected by cancer
Payroll Giving (also known as Give As You Earn) is a simple, tax-efficient way to support Cancer United directly from your salary.
By donating through your pay before tax is deducted, you can make a regular gift that helps us ensure no one faces cancer alone — while making your donation go even further.
It’s easy to set up. There’s no Direct Debit to manage, no bank details to share, and no Gift Aid forms to complete. Your donation is taken from your gross (pre-tax) salary, meaning the tax relief is applied automatically.
It’s straightforward for you — and efficient for us — so more of your support can go directly into our programmes.
How it works
If your employer already offers a Payroll Giving scheme, simply speak to your HR or Finance team about setting up a monthly donation.
If they don’t currently offer it, they can easily register with an HMRC-approved Payroll Giving Agency to get started.
Once set up, your donation will be deducted from your pay before tax on each payday.
Frequently asked questions:
Who can use Payroll Giving?
If you earn a salary or pension that is taxed through PAYE, you can donate through Payroll Giving.
If your employer offers the scheme, your HR or Finance team can help you enrol. If not, they can register with an approved agency to introduce it.
When will my donation start?
In most cases, deductions begin on your next payroll date. If you sign up close to the end of the month, it may begin the following payroll cycle.
How will I know it’s working?
You’ll see your donation listed on your payslip once it starts. We’ll also write to thank you and, if you’re happy to hear from us, share updates on the impact your support is making.
Is there a minimum or maximum amount?
There’s no set limit. You can give whatever feels right for you.
As a guide, we suggest a minimum of £5 gross per month to help make a meaningful difference.
How is Payroll Giving different from donating by Direct Debit?
With Payroll Giving, your donation is taken from your pre-tax salary. Because the tax relief is applied immediately, we don’t need to claim Gift Aid.
For higher-rate taxpayers (40% or 45%), Payroll Giving ensures we automatically receive the full value of your tax relief without you needing to claim anything back yourself.
Can I stop at any time?
Yes. You can stop or change your donation at any time by contacting your payroll department.
What happens if I change jobs?
Your donation will automatically stop when you leave your employer. If you move to a new job, you’ll simply need to set it up again.
Is there an administration fee?
Payroll Giving is managed through approved agencies who distribute donations to charities. They charge a small administration fee (usually between 2% and 4%) to cover their costs.
Some employers choose to cover this fee, meaning Cancer United receives your full donation. If not, the fee is deducted before the funds reach us.

I pay tax at 40% or 45%. What does that mean for my donation?
You receive tax relief at your highest rate of tax.
For example:
-
If you pay 40% tax, a £10 donation only costs you £6.
-
If you pay 45% tax, a £10 donation only costs you £5.50.
It’s one of the most effective ways to maximise your support.

Can I donate from my pension?
Yes. If you receive an occupational pension that is taxed through PAYE, you can donate directly from it before tax is deducted. Speak to your pension provider to arrange this.
Ready to get started?
The first step is simple — contact your HR or Finance team and ask if your organisation operates a Payroll Giving scheme.
If they do, they’ll guide you through the sign-up process.
If they don’t, you can encourage them to register via the official government Payroll Giving scheme.
If you’d prefer to support Cancer United in another way, you can also set up a regular Direct Debit donation.
